Types of Wood and its characteristics

Hardwood: Mahogany, Walnut, Deodar, Teak, Sheesham, Pertal, Chilgoza and Ash Wood

Softwood: Fir, Chir Pine and Hemlock

MAHOGANY (Swietenia mahagnonia)

  • Very fine and highly recommended types of wood for quality furniture
  • Relatively expensive
  • Reddish-brown to deep red coloring
  • Durable, long lasting wood
  • Attractive wood grain
  • Less likely to warp when exposed to sunlight
  • Good water resistant properties
  • Highly resistant to wear and tear
  • Stains and polishes well
  • It gives a rich luxurious finish
  • Due to hardness it is also highly recommended for doors

SHEESHAM/ TAHLI (Dalbergia sissoo)

  • Commonly name Indian Rose wood.
  • Known for its strength, class and beauty
  • It is not just popular in Pakistan; it is also popular throughout the world.
  • Golden brown or dark brown in color.
  • Looks glossy when polished
  • Due to its elastic and flexible nature, it is an ideal wood for furniture,
  • Its ability to endure high quality after polishing
  • It is perfect wood for beautiful furniture
  • It is less resistant to moisture

ROHIDA (Tecomella undulata)

  • Also known as, honey tree, desert teak, marwar teak (English)
  • It is mostly found in Thar Desert regions of India and Pakistan.
  • Rohida wood is dense grained, sturdy, yet light weight
  • The wood is prized equal to Teak
  • It is soft, durable and takes a good polish
  • It takes a fine finish after polish
  • Highly valued for making engraved furniture

DEODAR/DIYAR/DIYAL (Himalayan Cedar)

  • National tree of Pakistan
  • It looks astonishingly alluring when polished properly.
  • Deodar is in great demand as building material because of its durability, rot-resistant character and fine, close grain, which is capable of taking a high polish.
  • It is considered as the strongest of the conifers.
  • It is the most important soft wood of Pakistan found in the Himalyan ranges
  • It is yellowish brown in colour.
  • It is durable and show resistance against the attack of fungi.
  • Slight more Expensive than other types of wood
  • Straight, fine and even grains ensure a smooth texture
  • Good moisture and heat repellent properties
  • Its heartwood is strong and durable due to natural preservatives in it.

WALNUT/AKHROT (Juglans)

  • Walnut wood is hard, heavy, and resilient, capable of resisting warping and suffering very little shrinkage.
  • The grain is irregular but typically straight with a medium texture. The end grain is semi-porous with distinct growth rings.
  • Walnut is a tough hardwood of medium density, with moderate bending and crushing strengths, and low stiffness. It has a good steam-bending classification
  • Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks.
  • Mainly used for the production of luxurious interiors and exclusive furniture, interior paneling and cabinetry

It has good moisture resistance capability

TEAK (Tectona grandis)

  • Teak is also known as Sagwanin Pakistan and India.
  • Exceptionally strong and durable, cannot last for generations in a wide variety of climates with zero maintenance
  • Highly recommended for cabinets and furniture due to Glossy look.
  • It has a great appearance and natural insect and decays resistance properties
  • It has better tendency to resist moisture.
  • Teak wood is a very heavy and dense wood. It has a high weight to volume ratio
  • Does not absorb moisture during monsoon season,
  • Widely used for doors and window fittings.
  • Quite rare and it can be a very costly option.

Kail (Local pinewood)

  • Local pine wood is known as Kail
  • Moderately hard, durable and close grained.
  • Kail wood possesses too many knots in it.
  • This wood is commonly found in Himalayas of India.
  • The timber is straight grained with a fine texture.
  • The colour varies form creamy-white to pale yellow-brown, closely resembling.
  • Pakistani kail is a good and economical wood, though its availability is not as common as it used to be due to which its price has also increased.
  • Kail Pine is commonly used in furniture making, joinery, doors and windows also Veneer, plywood, sheathing, sub flooring, boxes, crates, posts/poles, interior trim, cabinetry, and construction lumber.
  • The timber kail wood is acknowledged for durability
  • It is more suitable for paint and enamel finishes than for polish work.

It has low stiffness and resistance to shock loads, with medium bending and crushing strengths.

Meranti Wood/ Red Meranti (S. curtisii)

  • It is commonly known as Philippine mahogany
  • Native tree to Indonesia (Kalimantan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, and can also be found in the Philippines.
  • The wood is a dark reddish brown with white resin streaks and a coarse texture.
  • The grain is normally interlocked or crossed, and has a moderately coarse texture.
  • Good strength and hardness that Offers resistance to decay and insect attack.
  • Meranti is also very affordable compared to other kinds of hardwoods
  • It is a very versatile and durable timber for indoor applications
  • It’s used for

The moderately durable timber is commonly used for plywood, interior furniture, molding, structure, furniture, cabinets, window and door trim, veneer, and boat-building.

Mango

  • Mango is brown in color
  • It is widely used as an economical wood for making doors, packing cases, toys and inferior furniture.
  • Mango is a hard wood with dense grains, so it has enough strength to support the weight needed for heavy chairs and tables
  • The versatility of the medium strength, and the high malleability
  • Despite its rigidity, mango wood is quite flexible, resilient and easy to work with tools
  • It has natural anti-parasitic capacity, and thus mango wood is rarely attacked by common insects.
  • Mango wood is waterproof, which increases its reliability and durability.

Is highly resistant to water, which makes this wood highly appreciated for making kitchen utensils.

PARTAL, FIR, PALUDAR (White Pine)

  • An evergreen tree having light and soft wood with an average weight
  • occurs naturally in North Western hilly areas
  • It is strong and hard, and is highly resistant to decay.
  • Commonly available in Pakistan
  • Very economical, best for tight budget
  • Creamy white when first cut but turn to light brownish with age
  • Partal is very light and soft wood.

It is mostly used for windows and door panels, railway sleepers, planking for floors and ceiling

ASH WOOD (Fraxinus)

  • Ash Wood has a typically straight grain and light-brown hue
  • Very attractive and gives uniform look.
  • The length of an adult Ash tree varies from 35 to 40 meters.
  • Ash is also known as firewood. It has low moisture content.
  • Neither cheap nor too expensive
  • Imported from US and Canada
  • Moderate crushing and bending strength
  • It less likely to shrink or swell
  • Smooth to touch and has open grains with brown streaks
  • It is extremely flexible without losing its strength
  • One of the unique properties of ash wood is that it has shock resisting density and hardness while also staying relatively lightweight
  • It is well used for interior and dry space, generally popular for making furniture, flooring, doors, cabinetry, architectural molding, millwork, tool handles, sports parts, turnings, and many more.

CHIR PINE (Pinus roxburghii)

  • Chir pine is widely planted for timber in northern Pakistan, India and Nepal.
  • This is a large tree reaching 30–50 m with a trunk diameter of up to 2 m
  • Resistance to degradation

Mostly used for making different patterns, carvings and designs on door panels and furniture.

HEMLOCK

  • Western hemlock is an evergreen tree from North America.
  • Known as Shekran in Pakistan.
  • Growing from 30 to 50 meters tall trees
  • Moderately light in weight,
  • Moderately hard
  • Coarse grained and uneven in texture
  • Readily absorbs moisture

Generally preferred for light framing, sheathing, subflooring, and roofing, ladders, paneling, crates, pallets and packing cases
